Math Learning DisabilityFor the student who struggles with math, learning disabilities are often
the unseen, underlying cause of the struggle. The inability to visualize
images from word problems often leads to failures perceived as a math
learning disability. In reality, the failure is due to a weakness in
visualization skill, not in computational ability. Underlying weakness in
important skills such as sound recognition, blending, and segmenting,
visualization and visual image manipulation, short term and working memory
efficiency, and logical associations, all make math hard or even
impossible. If the struggle is written off to a math learning disability,
the student will never overcome the problem. If the underlying skill
weakness is identified and corrected through appropriate cognitive training,
the student will have a chance to succeed at math and other academic
challenges. |
